Morning Geothermal Miracles: Lake Mashu & Mount Iou
Saying goodbye to Lake Akan in the morning, your private charter climbs smoothly along winding mountain roads into mystical Teshikaga Town.
Our first stop is Lake Mashu, famous for its shrouded veil of mist. Because no rivers flow in or out of this caldera lake, its water ranks among the clearest in the world. On clear days, sunlight reflects off the deep waters to produce a mesmerizing, jewel-like sapphire tint known worldwide as “Mashu Blue.”
Mount Iou: The Raw Geothermal Wilderness
Descending the mountain, a short 20-minute drive brings us to Mount Iou (Atosanupuri, meaning “Naked Mountain” in the Ainu language). This active volcano billows intense white steam and sulfur fumes.
Stepping out of the vehicle, walk right up to the roaring sulfur vents and marvel at the bright yellow sulfur crystals. Before leaving, grab a geothermal hot spring egg from the rest area—crack it open, sprinkle a little salt, and enjoy a unique local snack!

Afternoon Journey to the End of the Earth: Shiretoko Peninsula
After exploring Teshikaga, your private car travels north on the highway. As agricultural fields give way to the vast Sea of Okhotsk, you officially enter the Shiretoko Peninsula—meaning “the end of the earth” in the Ainu language.
Home to brown bears and untouched ecosystems, Shiretoko Five Lakes is the ultimate park highlight. To ensure visitor safety, take a peaceful stroll along the 800-meter Elevated Wooden Boardwalk equipped with an electrified bear fence. Look out over majestic snow-capped peaks mirrored on Lake 1’s pristine surface.
Oshin Koshin Waterfall: Roaring Coastal Twin Falls
On the way to your Utoro Onsen resort, your driver will stop by Oshin Koshin Waterfall, located right along the coastal highway.
Because the cascading stream splits into two distinct paths halfway down the cliff, it is affectionately called the “Twin Dragon Waterfall.” Watching the rushing water crash down against dramatic rock walls with the ocean as a backdrop provides a fantastic photo opportunity.

Recommended Seasonal Clothing Guide & Travel Tips
The Shiretoko Peninsula is remote and coastal, featuring strong ocean winds. Even during peak summer, temperatures drop sharply after sunset. Plan ahead with our seasonal packing chart:
| Season & Months | What to Wear | Travel Insider Tips |
| Spring (Apr – May) | Light down jackets, windproof coats, and warm long trousers. | Snow remains on the Shiretoko mountain pass until late spring. Strong coastal breezes make windproof outer layers essential. |
| Summer (Jun – Aug) | Short sleeves, breathable pants, light jackets, and bug spray. | High summer is ideal for boardwalk walks. However, evening coastal temperatures drop quickly; carry a light jacket. |
| Autumn (Sep – Nov) | Thermal innerwear (Heattech), thick sweaters, and windproof warm coats. | Shiretoko’s autumn foliage peaks in October. Temperatures plunge after dark, so dress in warm layers for night walks. |
| Winter (Dec – Mar) | Heavy down coats, non-slip snow boots, beanies, thermal gloves, and scarves. | The Sea of Okhotsk fills with drift ice (Ryuhyo). Mountain passes freeze over completely; hiring a private charter with a local expert driver is highly recommended. |
